Francis (Frank) Marion Ward
An 18 year old farmboy, enlisted as a Private in Company E at Champagnolle, Union County, Arkansas as an original member of the Regiment.
Transferred to the Regimental Band in June, 1864.
Frank Ward served with the Regiment for the full duration of the War and was paroled at Appomattox Courthouse on April 12, 1865.
Along with John Staples, Ward was the only other member of the Third Arkansas to be awarded a "Gold Star" medal for bravery by Hood's Texas Brigade.
Following the war, Ward returned to Champagnolle, Union County, Arkansas. He died there on February 3,1905.
Ward is buried approximately 20 yards away from John Staples in the Old Champagnolle Cemetery, near Calion, Union County, Arkansas.
Note: Family verbal history maintains Ward sent home for "safe keeping" the first battle flag of the Regiment (the Artillery flag) after the Regiment received a new flag from the ladies of Fredericksburg, VA in 1862. This flag later donated to the Old State House Museum long after Ward's death. The Old State House Museum does not substantiate this claim.
